I’m growing old, frail and vulnerable. So I sought out some
protection and joined a club called Black Society in 2011. Every year, this
club organizes a reunion dinner where all the ‘Big Brothers’ (老大) from various estates get together to dine, laugh and share
their stories and happenings in past year. One big brother asked me why I’m
always quiet and never share anything. I told him I’m just a ‘small fry’ and
had nothing to share but my drawings. When I showed them this drawing, some big
brothers gave me their thumbs-up, others laughed till tears flowed out from
their eyes. One 老大told me: “…your caricatures are so
much better than the Straits Times!” and immediately used my drawing as the
club’s icon.
