Bracing For Tough Time Ahead

This year is a lousy and gloom year.

Next year 2020 would be just as bad, if not, much worse.

Cost of living keeps going up with no sign of stopping.

Public transport fare has already gone up 2 years in a row.

Food prices keep going up due to climate change and profiteering. Medical costs and medical insurance premiums keep going up regardless if you are healthy or not.

My belt has no more holes left to tighten and my pants is getting loose. And our ‘Big Bros’ don’t care or address these issues. Sigh!

What Are Friends For?

While many are amused by my drawings, a few are concerned on the risks some of these drawings would bring, especially those mocking political cartoons.

So I asked my friends if one day, our “Big Bros” were to ‘invite’ me for a private coffee in a dark room to interview me about my drawings, would they use some of their capacity and power to bail me out. Almost immediately, everyone just change the topic or drop the conversation and exit from our chat groups. I guess this is the real world of pragmatism.

When help is in need, I’d know who are my real friends indeed!

Head You Win, Tail I Lose!

After one death and numerous severe injuries, the ban of PMDs on footpaths came too late. From a pedestrian’s perspective, PMDs should have been banned when they first appeared here few years ago.
At that time, our public train systems were breaking down often. To defuse commuters’ anger, our Big Bros diverted attention to promote a car-lite society here (another joke by itself). The flood-gate was opened to allow all kinds of PMDs and shared bicycles on our narrow footpaths causing chaos and spilling blood. Now that our train systems are stabilized and back to normal, it’s time to close this gate with tax-payers’ money being used to clean up the sh** caused by shared bicycles and PMDs. Things happened for a reason. This is just another joke that would soon be forgotten by most people.
We just missed a technical recession and unemployment is at an all time high. Economy outlook is equally bad next year.
Transport fare was just raised in Dec 2018. Now again, the biggest fare hike in ten years has been approved to start from today. And now, our Big Bros are talking about the GST hike in the coming months. Cost of living keeps going up and many residents are feeling the squeeze. Something really isn’t right on this island. I asked many friends and neighbours on their opinions on these issues, they just sulked and 大吐口水! (spit).
I fully understand their feelings! Sigh!

To Say or Not to Say

Last week, my Boss sat down with me to do my annual performance appraisal.

I was told my output value is behind target and I spent too much time raising concerns that are beyond my control.

I reasoned that the poor output is due to current poor economic situation and those raised concerns are genuine as issues had affected my well-being. I admitted that nothing could be changed but at least I could express my feelings and voice my concerns and unhappiness on issues.

My Boss remained silent for a moment & then concluded our meeting that there would be no pay rise for me. Sigh!

I guess the older you get, the more you see things in perspective and take them as a pinch of salt.

Talk Is Cheap

When you have made it in life, talk is easy.

When health and money problems are not an issue, the mind would be at peace.

When you have achieved financial freedom and have no more worry, you are able to do what you want and enjoy a carefree life.
For most people, no health=no work=no money=no peace=no life. For older people, please add “no youth” in front.

Hasta La Vista, Baby

Tougher times ahead for ageing PMET looking for jobs even if they are willing to be re-skilled and re-tooled.

The odds are low as employers shun hiring ageing PMET as foreign talents are aplenty here. Something is seriously not right in our systems.

You will never be obsolete if you’re born with a silver spoon. If not, one should make lots of money when young and save up for old age or have invested in recurring passive incomes for retirement. I realized this wisdom too late! Sigh!

Note: Terminator-Dark Fate movie is a disappointment. I gave it a rating of 6/10. The story is so-so and the actions are old and not much. My jaw did not drop, let alone open my mouth.

It's Good to be Back!

I grew up watching terminator movies. Only the first 2 movies were good. Movie no 3 was so-so and no. 4 & 5 were below standard as they were not produced by the same creator/producer, James Cameron. Now this movie no. 6 is a long-time coming, nearly 30 years late and is a continuation to movie no. 2.

This may probably be the last terminator movie starring the 2 ageing Hollywood stars: Linda Hamilton (63) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (72). Reviews stated this is a jaw-dropping movie. I hope mine wouldn’t drop too much!

One part I don’t yet understand in this no.6 movie: how come the T-800 Cyborg (played by Arnold) could age like a human?

Goodbye Nila!

This is a piece of art that cost S$8M to erect in 1995 and is a symbol of the small island.

It’s a pity to see it demolished in the coming weeks.

We often tell others we’re a smart nation with many smart people. Yet our designers/owners could not tweak their new design to accommodate this statue in their new development plans. Surely, there are innovative and creative ways to recycle it for other uses instead of tearing it down.

Goodbye Nila!

All Systems Go!

In the past, prams needed to be closed when you board the bus with them. Now regardless of pram’s size, you can just push it openly into crowded buses and trains. It’s the same free-access for PMDs and PMAs of all sizes in our “always-packed public transports. There are rules to limit bicycles/luggage’s sizes in public transport but nobody really care to enforce them. Our Big Bro is too busy with other priorities and has no time to think ahead how to contain this escalating problem. Commuters’ thinking: if Big Bro doesn’t say anything, this means everything can bring in lah!
Sigh!

Angel Has Fallen

Last known case of a 65-year old woman who died of internal injuries after being knocked down by a speeding unauthorized e-scooter. Now a petition has garnered more than 50,000 signatures to ban PMDs totally on shared paths. It’s time to take drastic actions. How much more injuries and blood needed for decision-makers to reverse their decisions to protect the pedestrians who originally have the right of way on footpaths?
Well, observing from their silence and ‘non-reactive mode, there isn’t any light at the end of this tunnel. Sigh!

Please Wake Up Now, My Friend!

I respected you a lot for your resilience in dealing with challenges. Now, you have lost both your mind and my respect.

You know very well that it’s pointless to raise your grievances and demands to your Supervisor who could not make big decisions but just acting on instructions given from the top. You should seek out and talk with the real ‘Big Boss’ and tell him directly what you want. Destroying public facilities and properties lead to misery and someone has to finally pay the price and face the aftermath: it’s going to be you, your families, children and your friends unless you are leaving this place for good after this prolong turmoil. You have a place to go?

Make good or look good?

Many people see and accept things base on their face values.

One has to think deeper to understand the real meaning behind everything that happens. Things happen for a reason that is most probably part of the ‘hidden agenda’ of the creator.

These days, our minds are mostly occupied by smart technology, who has the time to think?

Old age is a shipwreck

Some seniors work to pass time.

Many seniors here need to work to survive in this country of ever rising cost of living. More so for those with little savings and no passive income.

Seniors are already facing the challenge to find works paying decent wages as most employers shun employing older workers. The influx of younger and cheaper foreign talents adds to these seniors’ woes. Raising the re-employment, retirement age and CPF contribution for older workers would not address or solve this age-old problem. In fact, many business owners are now worried about higher business costs for employing older workers. The impact would be worst with tougher times ahead for seniors!

Give Your Best. Nothing Less

I dislike shabby and snobbish people and always avoid them unless I have no choice. I respect people who produced original and quality work. I strive to mimic them and deliver quality work with value. Not one who is a cheapie.

To excel in anything, I believe one must always have the heart to start, put in time and effort to finish what is started and the continuous drive to improve.

One must always: Give your best. Nothing less.

Talent is Everywhere!

All buyers want high quality stuff at the lowest price and want it delivered fast. This means buyers always look/want 3-in-1 deal. In reality, this rarely happens.

Anything of high quality or delivered fast is never cheap.

If stuff is cheap, quality won’t be good.

When quality stuff is cheap, they won’t be delivered fast.

This same analogy applies to talent too.

But there are some people who produce poor quality work at snail pace yet get high rewards.

These are the real and successful talents with hidden skills.

From A Frustrated Pedestrian

According to observations conducted by The Straits Times, 100% of PMD users were caught speeding (measured on speed-gun) above 10 kmh on footpaths. Yet they said they are gracious. What the heck!

‘Big Bro’ must wake up now and ban all PMD on our footpaths before more accident and bloods are ‘coughed’ out by victims.

Our footpaths are already so narrow for pedestrians, how to accommodate all the silent speeding PMD users coming from behind us? More and more PMA users are getting innovative these days.

Unless and until this problem is recognized by our ‘Big Bro’, there would be no solution in sight. Sigh!

Disruption: Bosses in Conflict

When two big bosses are in conflict, many people down the hierarchy suffer. If you’re a third-party, good luck to you.

Not so lucky if you’re inside the conflict. It would be worst if your own boss is under the control of either one of the big bosses. Some people would choose to leave the ‘hot’ environment but most people have no choice but to endure the long ‘battle’ ahead till the next major change comes. Meantime, people just pray everyday and hope for the best to survive the day.

If Not Now Then When?

According to The World Counts, at least 10% of the 100 million tons of plastic we use every year end up in the oceans. This is equivalent to the weight of 700 billion plastic bottles. Put on top of each other these bottles would reach further than the sun. But they are not going to the sun. They are in our oceans and will stay there.|

What happens to the Plastic you throw away?

Plastic is one of the most widely used and cheapest materials in the world today. You can find it anywhere. If it’s not made from plastic, it’s wrapped in plastic. We use around 5 trillion plastic bags a year worldwide! The US alone throws away enough plastic bottles in a week to encircle the world 5 times. Only 1 to 3% of all plastics used are recycled. After we use them, we throw them away.

In Singapore, NEA’s statistics show that in 2018, we generated 7.7 million tonnes of solid wastes. This includes 949,300 tonnes of plastic wastes disposed. Only 4% (40,700 tonnes) was recycled. The remaining quantity is mainly incinerated, thus an impact to the air we breathe.

Nations aiming for ZERO waste is nothing but a big idea and dream. Just observe people around you, their attitudes and habits towards reducing wastes. Most people won’t care. Current and past programmes and campaigns here yield little change in people’s attitudes towards this topic. Unless and until legislations are put in place to stop single-use plastics, this catastrophic situation can only get worst!

Is History Repeating Itself?

After 30 years, is history repeating itself or the beginning of another setback?
Only time will tell.

30 May 2019

It's the End of May

UK politics have always been chaotic. It’s just much worse this time. This laid-back government has been enjoying good lives for a very long time and when this crisis strikes, nobody could handle it. When everyone in the house has his or her own hidden agenda and thinking, nobody can agree on anything. In times of crisis, a strong leader is needed to steer the ship. It’s a surprise that this lady took 3 years to realize this and has finally decided to resign from this tough job as it’s going nowhere. Perhaps, she has her own hidden agenda too to hang on to this job but it has no end her journey!

Lesson confirmed & re-learned: when most people reject or refuse to support your proposals, it’s time to go!

Ban PMDs on all footpaths lah!

I salute the French authorities for taking the decision to ban e-scooters from pavements. At least they have acknowledged this as a hazard to pedestrians’ safety. But it’s not the case here. Sigh!

All forms of PMD should be banned from our footpaths till our infrastructure is in place. It is disappointing that our policy-makers have chosen to close their eyes & ears and view the car-lite objectives as more important than pedestrian’s safety. In fact, only a few are using their PMDs for work travel. Most PMD users are from food-delivery crew who speed and bulldoze their way on footpaths as they are paid by delivery trip. Why should this policy benefit food-delivery businesses at the expense of pedestrian’s safety?
Unless and until our “big brothers” feel the pain of the bloody injured pedestrians, there will be no ban. Perhaps our voices on this issue are not loud enough as those from Monica Baey (victim of NUS peeping tom saga) that managed to change our legislations here.

Protect Your Own Personal Data

Social media platforms are mainly used for entertainment and to kill time. It’s not for any real purpose or meaning. Some use them to spread fake news. Nobody should take them seriously. Yet many people are posting and putting their sensitive personal data and information online. For what?
Say what they want, people who created these platforms have no responsibility and trust whatsoever to safeguard and protect your personal data. Why let them use your data for free or misuse them? Think about it. Well, too much social media makes people stop thinking. That’s the point.

Hell Boss

When your boss from hell likes you very much, you’re guaranteed a hell of a good time and a long career ahead even if you cannot perform. When this hell boss doesn’t like you, then you’d only have hell.

However, there are some resilient workers who could adapt well in such hellacious environment and survive for a very long time. Kudos to these workers!
Majority of the workers pass time by asking: “What the hell is going on here?”

Bike-Sharing Should be Killed

When bike-sharing providers started to fold one by one, I was jumping for joy.
Now, there is one hazard less when I’m walking on footpaths and walkways. As a pedestrian myself, the only fear is those speeding PMD coming behind me. PMD users never obey rules and think they own all footpaths and walkways. Accidents are reported almost everyday. In my opinion, two-wheelers should never be allowed on footpaths and walkways as our infrastructures are not yet ready for such devices. Yet they are allowed on all our narrow footpaths. I hope our ‘big brothers’ and policy-makers wake up one day and reverse their decisions to stop PMD using and speeding freely on pathways. They should understand that footpaths are meant for the feet, not wheels!

Risks & Vulnerabilities of Digital Nations

When our “Big Bros” slip and let my personal data to be leaked, there is really nothing I could do. It’s time he wakes up and comes to his senses that current operational model of relying on external vendors to operate and manage our data does not work any more. Plugging holes every time there is a leak is totally reactive. “Big Bros” should take ownership and implement control & preventive actions to manage our data internally with competent people and terminate all external vendors whose performances are deteriorating and lacking.
How many more breaches are needed before our “Big Bros” acknowledge this & take the proactive approach?

The World of Big Fish Eats Small Fish

Every new leader taking over a new role must change ‘something’ to show the boss that they are just doing their job to ‘improve’ things.

Guardians with ‘small fishes’ currently should not be overly worried about this change. When the impact and effects of change kicks in after 10-20 years, most people would have already forgotten why the need to change in the first place.

My English friends said such change is akin to “putting old wine in new bottle”. My Chinese friends described such change as “
换汤不换药”. IMO, it’s just another way of labeling our “fishes” as Grade1, 2, 3 with G3 fetching the highest “price”. So which fish type should guardian nurture to bring in the highest value? The answer is still on the wall, isn’t it?

Creative Problem-Solving

Everyone has problems. It’s either big problems or small problems. If they could be resolved or controlled, it’s no problem. If not, they become big problems and people do funny or irrational acts.

There are many ways to problem solving. If none works, maybe you can try drinking away your problems as Psychology Professor Andrew Jarosz from Mississippi State University has done research that focuses on attention and its relation to problem solving and creativity.

His conclusion?

The drunks are better off in creative problem-solving. However, there is a ‘key’ to using this method. Find and read about his research.
